John Francis Myers

LITTLETON - John Francis Myers, age 54, of Golf Course Road, Littleton, died March 10, 2005 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

Mr. Myers was born May 9, 1950 in Washington, D.C., the son of the late John Aloysius Myers and Nora Borgia Walsh Myers. He was a retired auto mechanic and owned his own business for many years.

He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Patty Ann Myers, and a sister, Patricia M. Sullivan.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Lou Dawson Myers; his brother, James A. Myers and wife Joyce of Maryland; three sisters, Rita Felcher and husband Dick of Maryland, Mary Margaret Van Auken and husband Ralph of Pennsylvania and Nora Reese and husband Paul of Maryland; his mother-in-law, Betty L. Dawson of Frederick, Md.; his brother-in-law, Don Sullivan; a sister-in-law, Karen Kelly and husband Steve of Maryland; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held today, Sunday, March 13, 2005, at 4 p.m. at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Father Michael Butler officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Halifax County Humane Society.

Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids is handling arrangements.

Ruby Hudson Meyer

LEWISBURG, W.V. - Ruby Hudson Meyer, 85, of Lewisburg, W.V., formerly of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., passed away March 10, 2005 at Greenbrier Manor Nursing Home in Fairlea, W.V.

Mrs. Meyer was born January 8, 1920 in Roanoke Rapids, and was the daughter of the late Grover C. Ricks and Willie Ricks Sadler. She is a member of Rosemary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids and attended Rhema Christian Center in Lewisburg. Throughout her life, she had been an active member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Arthur M. Hudson and James F. Meyer Sr., a daughter, Sybill Hudson Holbrook and a brother, Willis C. Ricks.

She is survived by her daughter, Helen Hudson Allen and her husband, Roy, of Greensboro, N.C.; son-in-law Tommy L. Holbrook and his wife, Judy, Lewisburg, W.V.; a sister, Kate Novella Flynn of Hampton, Vir.; six grandchildren, Scott Allen and his wife, Cathy, of Greensboro, N.C., Steven Allen and his wife, Susan, of Greensboro, N.C., Jon Allen of Park City, Utah, Lane Holbrook and his wife, Amy, of Lewisburg, W.V., Brian Holbrook and his wife, Katy, of Roanoke, Vir. and Marc Holbrook and wife, Lauren, of Greensboro, N.C. She also leaves behind 13 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Meyer was a faithful Christian, loving mother and grandmother and touched the hearts of all that came into her path. The family would like to give a special 'thank you' to the staff of Greenbrier Manor who have been a very attentive and loving family of Mrs. Meyer for the last seven years. She commented many times on how caring and patient her nurses, aides and administrators have been over the years.

Mrs. Meyer will be transported to Roanoke Rapids, N.C. for a special memorial service to be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 20, 2005 at Rosemary Baptist Church. Friends are asked to gather in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. A private, family, interment will be held at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are requested to be sent to Rosemary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids.

Richard Rook Jr.

GASTON - Funeral arrangements are incomplete and being handled by Faison's Funeral Home in Seaboard for Mr. Richard Rook Jr., 86, of Gaston, who departed his earthly life Friday, March 11, 2005, at Warren Hill Nursing Home in Warrenton.

Bill Harris

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Wilmer Long "Bill" Harris, beloved husband of Esma Jones Harris, died on the evening of March 2, 2005 at his residence in Charleston, S.C.

Mr. Harris was born December 31, 1928 in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, the son of Paul Edward Harris and Flossie Pearce Harris. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired as Assistant Manager with Crawford and Company, Insurance Adjusters. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Charleston Elks Lodge #242.

He was preceded in death by his step-son, Stanley Spurgeon.

He is survived by by his wife of Charleston, S.C.; one son, David S. Harris and his wife, Denise, of Charleston, S.C.; two daughters, Martee H. Goldberg and her husband, Alan, of Silver Spring, Md. and Windi H. McKeithan and her husband, Ryan, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; one step-son, Dennis A. Spurgeon of Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren, Savannah, Paige, Zach, Chandler, Leah and Sam; a sister, Melba H. Reinke and her husband, Don, of Sequiem, Wash., and two brothers, Paul T. Harris and his wife, Ruth Lee, of Roanoke Rapids and Jimmy L. Harris and his wife, Kathy, of Durham.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 5, 2005 in Westminster Presbyterian Church. Interment followed at Carolina Memorial Gardens.

William Andrew 'Rock' Rowbottom

ROANOKE RAPIDS - William Andrew "Rock" Rowbotom, 78, of 141 Buttercup Lane, Roanoke Rapids, a retired gunnery sergeant, USMC, died Thursday, March 10, 2005 at Halifax Regional medical center.

Mr. Rowbottom was born in Niles, Ohio on Aug. 24, 1926. He was in the United States Armed Forces for 22 years, serving in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He was owner and operator of the South Rosemary 66 and Park Avenue 66 service stations and retired from New Dixie Oil Company.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Lee and Georgiana Lavrock Rowbottom; his wives, Geraldine Butler Rowbottom and Willie "Dot" Medlin Acrey Rowbottom; two brothers, D. Myron Rowbottom and Leroy Rowbottom; and one sister, Ruth Moore Langham.

He is survived by two daughters, Peggy Lee Graumlich of Peoria, Ill., and Patricia Ann Grooms of Roanoke Rapids; two brothers, Harold T. Rowbottom and George L. Rowbottom; one sister, Isabella R. McCloskey; four grandchildren, William Wheeler, Andrew Graumlich, Sara Grooms and George Graumlich; his step-children, Linwood Newsome, Michael Newsome, John O. Acrey Jr., Raymond Earl Acrey, Steve Acrey, Patricia Dessommes, Dennis Acrey and Darlene Cox; his step-grandchildren; Garrick Newsome, Matt Newsome, Sam Newsome, Donna Lou McAdams, Bobby Acrey, Stephanie Frandson, Brian Chase, Aaron Chase, Heather Nolte, Sean Dessommes, Tabitha Wells, Forest Acrey Jr., Damien Cox, Nicole Acrey and Sean Acrey; and 15 step-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Rowbottom's funeral will be private.

Arrangements are in the care of Hockaday Funeral Home.

Marie Stephens Carter

ROANOKE RAPIDS - Marie Stephens Carter, 89, of Roanoke Rapids died Friday, March 11, 2005 at Guardian Care in Roanoke Rapids. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and are being handled by Hockaday Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids.
